UE bows out in style, deals DLSU stunning loss in OT

The UE Red Warriors dealt a serious blow to the Final Four aspirations of the De La Salle Green Archers with a huge 80-72 win Saturday in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Rey Remogat had a UAAP career-high 24 points, including a booming triple with 46.1 seconds left that gave the Red Warriors a 78-72 lead.

It was the first time since Season 72 in 2009 that UE swept DLSU. The Red Warriors defeated the Green Archers in the first round, 81-74.

With the Adamson Falcons’ win over the NU Bulldogs earlier that gave them a 7-6 card, the Green Archers slid out of the Final Four picture with a 6-7 record. The Red Warriors finished their Season 85 campaign at 5-9 after going winless in Season 84.

On Wednesday, DLSU faces cellar-dweller UST while Adamson takes on the Ateneo Blue Eagles with the Falcons advancing to the post-season should they win. In the event of a La Salle win and an Adamson loss, there will be a playoff for the fourth slot.

The Green Archers looked head for the win after Mark Nonoy, who topscored with 14 points, hit back-to-back triples to give his side a 68-64 edge with 1:25 to go in the game. But the Red Warriors fought back to tie it up and send the game into extra time.

In the overtime period, DLSU scored the first four points, but Remogat fueled a 12-0 wind-up to put the game away.
